HISTORIE
A mountaineering challenge against a creature — time — that moves swiftly but leaves its mark.
Conceived in 2023 by a group of young mountaineers, the Karnisches Ungetüm (KUT) is a highly technical journey among the rocks of one of the most iconic lines in European history.
The route largely follows that of the Karnischer Höhenweg, the high trail number 403 that cuts horizontally through the Carnic Alps, passing through the heart of Tyrol, just steps from the front lines of World War I.
The KUT’s sole route covers 75 kilometers and 5,200 meters of elevation gain, challenging athletes to a true test of endurance and speed: completing the one-way journey from Sillian to Kötschach-Mauthen within the time limit of 20 hours. The start, scheduled for midnight on August 15, reflects the epic and intriguing qualities that define this event.
Over the past few years, participation in the KUT has grown, reaching 150 race numbers assigned, but it remains an experience for a select few. Running through the wildest and most immersive scenery of the Austrian Dolomites, among meadows, forests, and streams at high elevation, is a memorable experience, designed primarily for the elite of the sport.
The race requires experience and familiarity with difficult terrain, but the animated cheers of the fans along the trails and the monsters that greet the athletes at the finish line help create an unforgettable atmosphere.
Since 2025, we have been an enthusiastic partner of this event, which, with its technical nature and Dolomite setting, elevates the concept of sky running to an ultra dimension.
