MARC HOCHSTAFFL

BIOGRAPHY

Marc was born April 23, 1985, in Mittersill, Austria. As a child, he frequently went with his father to the nearby Pinzgau mountains. Marc’s sports career, like that of almost every Austrian child, began with Alpine ski racing, until, at age 14, he discovered a new challenge: road cycling. The Salzburg native continued to go to the mountains near his home, though, and during a Haute Route excursion in 2001 with friends he felt a growing desire to participate in a ski mountaineering race. Marc finally gave in to this desire and entered his first race in 2009, after successfully completing his mountaineering instructor’s certification.

When asked about the fascination of his sport, the athlete from Uttendorf responded enthusiastically: “What fascinates me is measuring myself against the best athletes in the world, the one-on-one combat, the team spirit that develops in a team competition, giving 100 percent, the heart beating like mad and the perfect mastery of technique. And all this in the middle of a dreamlike mountain landscape.” It is no surprise, then, that his favorite races are those on the Grande Course circuit, including the Pierra Menta, Adamello Ski Raid, Tour du Rutor and Trofeo Mezzalama. Marc’s best results include an eighth place at Mountain Attack, third place at the Kitzsteinhorn Xtreme and an exceptional 10th place at Sella Ronda 2017. Marc also won the vertical race at the Salzburg state championships. In his free time as well, Marc always returns to the high mountains. He has already climbed several 6,000-meter peaks in Ecuador and Peru.
